Travelling can be either a wonderful experience or a living hell, so it’s best to be prepared and to have most details of your trip planned. If i had a dollar for every story I’ve heard of someone who was stuck on their vacation for lack of preparation, i wouldn’t be rich, but I’ll have a few extra dollars to spend. I’ve even had a few of those experiences myself, but hey my loss is your gain, so here are a few things you should know before you travel to your next destination whether it be within the Caribbean or not.
The Checklist
- Start planning early – It is said that battles are won in their preparation, and the same thing applies to travelling, don’t wait till the day before your trip for you to start planning.
- Make a to do/see list – After you have chosen your destination, start planning specific things you want to see or do at your destination. Do the necessary research, make sure that the attractions you want to see are open at that time of year.
- Contact a tour guide – Don’t wait till you’re in the country to contact your tour guides, get it done early, make sure that there are tours available for that time of year.
- Know your climate– Know the climate you’re visiting and pack accordingly, believe me you don’t want to end up in the dead of winter and all you packed was khaki shorts, nor do you want to visit the Caribbean, and have thick heavy clothing, so pack accordingly.
- Travel documents – Get your travel documents in order, each country is different and require different travel document e.g. Visas, passports, etc. Etc. Within the Caribbean most of the islands and countries only require a passport and no visas, but it’s best to find out what is required before you hop on a plane.
- Get information about the country – Find out if the country has safe drinking water, what is their standard electrical voltage, what currencies do they accept, and what is the standard cost of transportation and living.
- Inform your bank – Don’t get stranded without any money, inform your bank before you leave, so they wouldn’t flag your card for fraudulent activity, because it is being used outside of your home country
Perhaps the most important thing to bring on any vacation is a heart ready for adventure and new experiences *p.s. Also bring your camera to store some of your fantastic memories.
So be smart plan in advance and no doubt you would have an amazing time. Check out some resources below to help you plan your trip.
If you’re visiting the Caribbean – Remember the Caribbean is a temperate zone, so pack light clothing, bring plenty of sun block/screen and don’t forget your swimming trunks/bikini.
Hiking is another activity in the Caribbean so bring a pair of hiking shoes and insect repellent for mosquitoes and sandflies is a must. Most of the Caribbean speaks English and accepts US dollars along side its local currency.
